Japan has contributed a lot of new findings and discoveries in the scientific and technological domains. The country invented and reinvented video games, camera phones, Quick Response (QR) code, Karaoke, electric rice cooker, 3D printing, Android, LCD and LED televisions, and emojis.

Japan knows that when a need arises, a creative and resourceful person has to invent something to address the problem. The Japanese have found new ways to make our lives better and more exciting. And now, they’re at it again with their strange blanket that can allegedly control a person’s body temperature to create the optimal condition needed to fall asleep.

The blanket was invented by Golden Field, the same company that owns and manages the Japanese massage parlor chain Goku no Kimochi. It’s now commercially available in the country and publicly dubbed as “Udon For Sleeping” or “Japanese Noodle Blanket”.

Golden Field and its companies specialize in massages, spa treatments, and sleeping machines. They cater to customers who want to relax and fall into a deep sleep. Goku no Kimochi, specifically, require newcomers to place their reservation three months earlier because of the long queue. It’s safe to say that due to Goku no Kimochi’s popularity, specialization, and services, Golden Field came up with a revolutionary sleeping blanket that can change the way people sleep.

The blanket was inspired by the interesting structure of Udon noodles, a thick Japanese noodle made with flour. It has eight white, thick tentacles that can support a person’s entire body, and it’s supposed to be paired with a thin mesh top cover.

Users can coil their bodies around the blanket however they want to find the most comfortable sleeping position. Golden Field claims that the blanket gives extra warmth to its users, allowing them to reach their normal temperature for sleeping. Conversely, the blanket also cools down the body in the middle of a sleep cycle, helping its users to fall into a deep, comfortable sleep.

If the blanket is true to its claims, users can expect their body temperature to drop while sleeping. According to Dr. Matthew Walker, one of the most famous psychologists and neuroscientists in America, “[Our] core body temperature needs to drop by about 2 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit to initiate good sleep and then maintain deep sleep.”

Walker warned that if a person’s temperature is higher than normal, he or she will find it hard to complete a full-sleep cycle: “If our core temperature is too high, the brain cannot easily make the switch from being awake to being asleep, or create the best quality sleep.” —this is the problem that Golden Field’s blanket wants to combat. If you can’t control the room temperature, then the blanket can control your body temperature.

The blanket is available at Goku no Kimochi’s website for JP¥16,800 (US$158). If you want to put the blanket to a test and get a good night’s sleep, make sure to reserve one as soon as possible since it’s the company’s current best-selling item.
